What is CNC milling?

CNC milling is a subtractive machining process in which material is removed by a computer-controlled rotating tool (end mill). Unlike turning, a CNC milling machine can produce flat surfaces, pockets, slots, threads and complex 3D shapes — in both plastics and metals. It is one of the most versatile methods for manufacturing precision components.

At MAJ-PLAST in Gdańsk we perform 3-axis and 5-axis milling on modern CNC machining centres. 3-axis milling is used for simpler geometries — pockets, holes, flat surfaces. 5-axis milling enables machining of complex spatial shapes in a single setup, eliminating datum errors and reducing production time.

We mill engineering plastics (PA, POM, PE-UHMW, PTFE, PEEK, PC, PMMA) and metals (aluminium, stainless steel, brass, copper, bronze). We achieve dimensional tolerances of IT6 (±0.01 mm) and surface roughness Ra 0.4 µm. Our ISO 9001:2015 certification confirms the repeatability and quality of our production.

Machine park — CNC machining centres

The CNC milling department at MAJ-PLAST is equipped with modern, high-rigidity CNC machining centres. Our machines handle workpieces up to 1000 x 600 x 500 mm and 300 kg. Spindle speeds up to 24,000 rpm enable efficient machining of both engineering plastics and hardened steel.

We operate 3-axis centres for standard components and 5-axis centres for complex spatial geometries without re-clamping. 5-axis milling is essential for injection mould production, EDM electrodes and precision mechanical components.

Every CNC machining centre is fitted with a touch probe, automatic tool changer (up to 30 positions) and through-spindle coolant. Programming is done in CAM software — we optimise toolpaths for cycle time and cutter life.

CNC Milling in Gdańsk — Machining in Pomerania

MAJ-PLAST is a manufacturing facility located in Gdańsk at al. Grunwaldzka 311/A — in the heart of the Tri-City area, with excellent access to the Port of Gdynia and the A1 motorway. In addition to plastic injection moulding and injection mould manufacturing, we specialise in precision CNC milling of plastics and metals. We have been operating since 1993 — over three decades of machining experience.

CNC milling of plastics is one of our core competencies. We machine engineering plastics that require a specialist approach — POM (acetal) for precision mechanical parts, PA6 and PA66 for structural components, PE-UHMW for guides and slides, PTFE (Teflon) for chemically resistant seals, and PEEK for high-temperature applications in aerospace and medical industries. CNC milling of plastics requires careful selection of cutting parameters — lower feed rates, sharp tools with polished cutting edges and effective chip evacuation to prevent material overheating.

CNC machining in Gdańsk at MAJ-PLAST also includes metal milling — aluminium (PA4, PA6, PA9), stainless steel (304, 316L), brass, copper and bronze. Aluminium is the most commonly milled metal — we use it for electronics housings, heat sinks, machine structural parts and prototypes. We mill stainless steel for the food, medical and chemical industries where corrosion resistance is required.

Machining in the Tri-City — why do clients choose MAJ-PLAST? First — comprehensive service. Under one roof we offer CNC milling, EDM machining, plastic injection moulding and sub-assembly. The client does not need to coordinate multiple subcontractors. Second — flexibility. We handle single prototypes (from 1 piece) as well as production runs of several thousand parts per month. Third — precision. Our CNC machining centres achieve IT6 tolerances and Ra 0.4 µm surface roughness — the level required by the automotive, aerospace and medical industries.

Every CNC milling order begins with a technical analysis. The client sends a 3D model (STEP, IGES, Parasolid) or a 2D drawing (PDF, DWG). Our engineers analyse the part geometry, select the optimal machining strategy (roughing, finishing, HSM), tooling and cutting parameters. If they identify potential issues — walls that are too thin, deep pockets with small radii, clamping difficulties — they propose modifications in line with DFM (Design for Manufacturing) principles. Quotations are free and delivered within 24 hours.

3-axis and 5-axis milling at MAJ-PLAST is carried out in accordance with ISO 9001:2015. Critical dimensions are measured on coordinate measuring machines and digital height gauges. Machining parameters (spindle speed, feed rate, depth of cut) are recorded and archived. On request, we provide 3D measurement reports and material certificates.

The Gdańsk location offers logistical advantages — proximity to the Port of Gdynia enables fast exports, while the A1 motorway provides convenient transport to central and southern Poland. For Tri-City clients (Gdańsk, Gdynia, Sopot) we offer on-site collection and factory visits. We work with companies in the automotive, medical, aerospace, electronics, machinery and energy sectors.

Frequently asked questions

What materials can be CNC milled?

We mill engineering plastics (POM, PA, PE-UHMW, PTFE, PEEK, PC, PMMA) and metals (aluminium, stainless steel, brass, copper, bronze). We select cutting parameters individually for each material to ensure optimal surface quality and dimensional accuracy.

What tolerances do you achieve with CNC milling?

We typically work to IT7–IT8 tolerances (±0.02–0.05 mm). For precision parts we achieve IT6 tolerances (±0.01 mm) and surface roughness Ra 0.4 µm. Accuracy is verified with coordinate measuring machines.

What is the difference between 3-axis and 5-axis milling?

3-axis milling operates along three linear axes (X, Y, Z) — suitable for pockets, holes and flat surfaces. 5-axis milling adds two rotary axes, enabling machining of complex spatial shapes in a single setup — eliminating re-clamping and datum errors.

What is the minimum order for CNC milling?

We handle orders from 1 piece (prototypes) up to production runs of several thousand parts per month. There is no minimum order — every project is quoted individually. Cost depends on material, geometry complexity and required accuracy.

What is the lead time for CNC milling?

Prototypes and single parts — 3 to 5 business days. Production runs — lead time agreed individually, typically 1–3 weeks. Express delivery in 24–48 h is available upon request.
